Spanish F-18 fighters activated 19 times in Romania
Spanish F-18 fighters, operating as the Paznic Tactical Air Detachment, have been activated 19 times for urgent ‘Alpha Scramble’ alerts since August 1 to defend Romanian airspace against Russian threats.
As part of NATO’s Enhanced Air Police (eAP) mission on the European eastern flank, these aircraft monitor the region near the Danube delta and the Black Sea. During the night of September 23-24, Romanian authorities detected a potential aerial threat near the border north of the Ukrainian town of Chilia Veche.
In response to the detection, the Romanian Ministry of Defense notified the Inspectorate General for Emergency Situations, and a RO-Alert was issued to the population of the Tulcea district. Two Spanish F-18s subsequently scrambled from the Mihail Kogălniceanu air base in Romania to monitor the situation and ensure airspace security.
