Spanish F-18 jets scrambled near Romanian border after aerial target detection
Two Spanish Air and Space Force F-18 aircraft were scrambled from Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base on Thursday, August 27, following the detection of aerial targets near the Romanian border.
Radar systems identified an aerial target approximately 33 kilometers north of Snake Island. In response, the Spanish F-18s were deployed to monitor the situation as part of an enhanced air policing mission. Additionally, the Romanian Air Force scrambled an IAR-330 PUMA SOCAT helicopter to assist in monitoring the area.
The National Military Command Center notified the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU), which issued a RO-Alert message to residents in northern Tulcea County. The alert advised citizens to remain calm and seek shelter in case objects fall from the airspace. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely amid ongoing Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure near the Danube region.
