Spanish families face record back-to-school costs

Spanish families are facing record-breaking back-to-school expenses this September. In the region of Andalucía, costs are expected to exceed 600 euros per child. Reports from the consumer organization Ocu suggest average costs could reach 550 euros, covering enrollment fees, clothing, uniforms, textbooks, and IT equipment.

Expenditure varies significantly by region and school type. Madrid is identified as the most expensive region, while Asturias is the least expensive. In Andalucía, average costs are approximately 615 euros for state schools and 766 euros for state-subsidized private schools, rising to 1,826 euros for private institutions.

Total academic year spending has seen a steady increase, rising from 2,006 euros per student in 2019 to 2,484 euros this year. The highest financial burden is felt by families with nursery-aged children (ages three to five), with annual costs averaging 2,597 euros.
