Spanish farmers and engineers develop tech to combat invasive species

Agricultural producers in Spain are collaborating with engineers and scientists to develop customized technologies to combat the impact of invasive species on irrigation systems.

In the Guadiana river basin, the irrigation communities of Badajoz de Lobón and Montijo have faced significant challenges due to the invasion of the Asian clam. To address this, the company STF, part of MatHolding’s Waters division, developed a specialized mesh filter system for hydrants. Unlike previous solutions used for tiger mussels that targeted larvae, these new filters are designed to prevent the Asian clam itself from entering and obstructing irrigation networks.

The technology was first implemented in the Guadiana basin and has since been adopted by other irrigation communities facing similar biological threats.
