Asian clam invasion in Guadiana River irrigation

Overview

Irrigation communities along the Guadiana River in Extremadura, Spain, began inspecting water filters impacted by the invasive Asian clam.

To address these challenges, agricultural producers collaborated with engineers and scientists to develop specialized technology. The company STF, part of MatHolding’s Waters division, created a customized mesh filter system for hydrants. Unlike previous solutions designed for tiger mussels that targeted larvae, these new filters are specifically engineered to prevent the Asian clam from entering and obstructing irrigation networks.

Following initial implementation in the Guadiana basin, the technology has been adopted by other irrigation communities facing similar biological threats.
