Spanish Film Academy preselects three films for 2027 Oscars

The Spanish Film Academy has announced the three preselected films competing to represent Spain in the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards (Oscars 2027). The finalists are ‘La bola negra’ by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, ‘El ser querido’ by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, and ‘Los domingos’ by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa.

Miriam Garlo, the recent Goya winner for Best New Actress, announced the shortlist. The Academy will hold a second round of voting to select the final representative, with the official announcement scheduled for September 16. The chosen film will succeed ‘Sirat’ as Spain's contender.

Among the candidates, ‘La bola negra’ is noted for its recent Best Director win at Cannes and its connection to the unfinished works of Federico García Lorca. ‘El ser querido’ stars Javier Bardem and Victoria Luengo, focusing on a tense reunion between a director and his daughter. ‘Los domingos’ is a highly acclaimed production that previously won the Concha de Oro in San Sebastián.
