Spanish government awards €40 million for territorial projects and €23 million for reversible hydro plant

The Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO) announced provisional approval of 194 local entities to receive up to €40 million to finance innovative territorial transformation and depopulation‑combat projects. The call attracted more than 1,200 applications from municipalities, provinces, comarcas and community groups, covering sectors such as bioeconomy, climate resilience, care services, transport, entrepreneurship, culture, housing and innovation. Funding will be allocated over the next two years pending a complaints period.

In a separate decision, MITECO together with the Institute for Diversification and Energy Savings (IDAE) granted €23.07 million to the Los Guájares reversible hydroelectric plant in Granada province. The project, the only Andalusian beneficiary among seven selected nationwide under the second BORALMAC programme, will install 357 MW of turbine capacity and store up to 2,969 MWh, contributing to grid flexibility and renewable integration. The overall BORALMAC 2 programme totals €165 million, expanding the original €90 million budget.
