Spanish Government urges Senate to ratify France treaty before Macron visit
The Spanish Government has requested that the Senate prioritize the ratification of the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Spain and France. This request follows a unanimous ruling by the Constitutional Court confirming the treaty's compatibility with the Spanish Constitution.
Secretary of State for Relations with the Courts, Rafael Simancas, has urged Senate President Pedro Rollán to include the treaty on the agenda for the plenary sessions scheduled for September 29 and 30. The timing is intended to ensure ratification occurs before the state visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Madrid, which includes a gala dinner with the Spanish monarchs and a meeting with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
The treaty, originally signed in Barcelona in 2023, had previously been approved by the Congress but faced delays in the Senate following challenges from the People's Party (PP). With the constitutional clearance now secured, the government seeks to finalize the diplomatic agreement during the upcoming parliamentary session.
