Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix 2026 marked by retirements and collisions

The 2026 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix at the new MadRing circuit was marked by high tension and technical failures. Lewis Hamilton, driving for Ferrari, was forced to retire from the race due to brake issues on his SF-26, leaving him “demoralized” after a weekend that included a crash in practice and a fourth-place qualifying result.

Spanish drivers Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz were involved in a heated on-track collision. Alonso, driving for Aston Martin, criticized Sainz for pushing him into the wall at high speeds, stating, “At 340 km/h, I prefer not to be pushed into a wall. I prefer to be alive at the end of the race.” Sainz, driving for Williams, received a five-second penalty for the incident and ultimately failed to finish the race following earlier damage from contact with Yuki Tsunoda.

In the competitive field, Max Verstappen of Red Bull engaged in aggressive early-lap battles, including a confrontation with Hamilton, before ultimately being unable to hold off Lando Norris's McLaren. Following the race, Ferrari Team Principal Frederic Vasseur confirmed that the team will continue developing the SF-26 rather than shifting focus entirely to next year's car.
