2026 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid

Overview

Madrid hosted the inaugural 2026 Formula 1 TAG Heuer Gran Premio de España at the new MadRing circuit, marking the sport’s return to the Spanish capital after more than forty years. The event featured celebrations such as video-mapping projections at the Puerta del Sol and displays from Hispano Suiza.

The race was characterized by high tension and technical failures. Lewis Hamilton, driving for Ferrari, was forced to retire due to brake issues on his SF-26, leaving him “demoralized” following a weekend that included a practice crash.

A significant confrontation occurred between Spanish drivers Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz. After Sainz pushed Alonso against the wall during a high-speed maneuver, Alonso expressed safety concerns via team radio, stating, “At 340 km/h I prefer that nobody pushes me against the wall. I prefer to be alive at the end of the race.” The FIA issued Sainz a five-second penalty; however, Sainz, driving for Williams, ultimately failed to finish the race following earlier damage from contact with Yuki Tsunoda.

In the competitive field, Max Verstappen engaged in aggressive early-lap battles, including a confrontation with Hamilton, but was unable to hold off Lando Norris’s McLaren. Following the race, Ferrari Team Principal Frederic Vasseur confirmed that the team will continue developing the SF-26 rather than shifting focus entirely to next year’s car.
