Spanish historical monuments undergo major restoration projects
Major restoration projects have commenced on two significant historical monuments in Spain.
In Antequera, work is beginning on the facade and roof of the Real Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor, a 16th-century structure. The project, led by Estudio de Arquitectura Marcos Sánchez and executed by Actúa Infraestructuras, aims to restore the temple to its original mid-16th-century appearance. Key tasks include cleaning surfaces, treating vegetation and fungi, and consolidating stone. A primary goal is the recovery of the monument's pinnacles; while 30 of the original 41 remain, the project seeks to restore the architectural silhouette.
In Xàtiva, the former Real Monasterio de Santa Clara is undergoing a 9.3 million euro transformation to become the Centre Raimon d'Activitats Culturals (CRAC). After 25 years of vacancy following the departure of the Clarissa nuns, a consortium including Estudio Método de la Restauración and Torrescámara has begun a 24-month rehabilitation plan. The project will convert the historic 14th-century building into a cultural hub, featuring an auditorium in the former church, exhibition halls in the refectory and dormitory, and rehearsal spaces in the upper choir.
