Public funding for heritage restoration

Overview

By late August 2026, restoration efforts expanded to include religious monuments. In Argentina, six iron sculptures on the San Juan Cathedral facade, originally crafted in France in 1870, were restored and returned to their positions following damage from a 1944 earthquake. A public blessing ceremony was scheduled for August 29 to mark the completion and to announce a new phase involving the remodeling of the adjacent side plaza and the installation of restored metal lanterns.

In Spain, the Novelda City Council awarded a contract for the rehabilitation of the Sanctuary of Santa María Magdalena to resolve structural issues that have kept the monument closed since December 2025. Other regional projects included the use of traditional ‘tapial’ techniques for the Puig de Sant Pere wall in Palma and over €2.2 million for Bellver Castle access improvements. In San Fernando, a €4.24 million rehabilitation of the 18th-century Casa Lazaga was launched.

In early September, additional Spanish regional projects were reported. In Córdoba, efforts focused on the conservation of mural paintings and the southern facade of the Mosque-Cathedral. In Sevilla, a €3.9 million restoration project was launched at the Real Monasterio de Santa Clara, targeting the Sala de Profundis. By mid-October, work at the Seville monastery progressed with the issuance of technical specifications for archaeological assistance, including stratigraphic testing and subsoil analysis. Additionally, in Pontevedra, a project with a budget of €821,555 was launched to recover the historic gardens of the former Santa Clara convent, aiming for public access by 2027. In Xàtiva, a €9.3 million, 24-month rehabilitation of the former Real Monasterio de Santa Clara has commenced.
