Spanish judge extends Montoro corruption probe by six months
Judge Rubén Rus of the Tarragona court has extended the investigation of the case against former finance minister Cristóbal Montoro and other ex‑high‑ranking Treasury officials by six months. The probe examines alleged influence‑peddling through Montoro's consultancy firm Equipo Económico, accused of shaping tax legislation – notably changes to the Electric Tax and the Economic Activities Tax – to benefit gas‑industry companies linked to the Association of Manufacturers of Industrial and Medicinal Gases (AFGIM).
The investigation, opened in August 2018, has repeatedly been prolonged. Fifteen individuals have been summoned, including five legal entities and ten natural persons, but only one has responded. Three suspects reside abroad, requiring international judicial cooperation. The judge described the case as "sumamente compleja" and noted pending reports from the Mossos d'Esquadra, Hacienda and other authorities.
No interview has yet been conducted with Montoro or the other primary suspects, and the judge indicated the likelihood of further investigative steps.
