Overview

In late July 2026, Spanish courts continued to prolong investigations into separate corruption cases. On 23 July, a judge extended the secrecy of the Soria municipal probe (Operation Fuentona) for another month, allowing the right-wing Vox party to act as a popular accuser. The investigation focuses on alleged pre-varication, influence-peddling, document falsification, unlawful contracts, money laundering and links to a criminal organization tied to the company Biosfera. The probe follows a 23 June Guardia Civil raid on the town hall that resulted in the detention of councillor Yolanda Santos and six others connected to Biosfera; all detainees were subsequently released pending charges.

Four days later, on 27 July, the Tarragona court extended the Montoro corruption probe by six months. The case examines alleged influence-peddling by former finance minister Cristóbal Montoro through his consultancy firm Equipo Económico, purportedly shaping tax legislation to benefit gas-industry firms. The investigation, opened in 2018, has already summoned fifteen individuals and involves international cooperation. Judge Rubén Rus described the case as “sumamente compleja” (extremely complex), noting that no interviews have yet been conducted with Montoro or other primary suspects.

By 20 August, judicial secrecy regarding the Soria ‘Fuentona case’ was extended for a second time. This measure is intended to protect ongoing investigations by preventing involved parties from accessing case files as authorities examine potential administrative malfeasance and municipal contracts involving Biosfera.
