Spain general elections: Left-wing parties form strategic Senate alliances

As the deadline for registering electoral coalitions approaches, Spanish left-wing parties are forming various strategic alliances for the general elections scheduled for November 29. While the PSOE will run alone for the Congress of Deputies, it has reached an agreement with the Frente Amplio coalition to run jointly for the Senate in most of Spain under the brand ‘Senado de Progreso’. This move aims to prevent the Partido Popular (PP) from securing an absolute majority in the upper house.

In the Valencian Community, the PSPV has joined the Compromís-Front Valencià alliance for the Senate. In Aragon, the PSOE, CHA, and IU have agreed to a joint Senate candidacy named ‘Frente de progreso’. However, efforts to create a unified national left-wing bloc for the Congress have largely failed. Negotiations between the Frente Amplio (comprising IU, Más Madrid, Comuns, and Movimiento Sumar) and Podemos collapsed without a global agreement, except for specific pacts in the Canary Islands and the Valencian Community.

In the Canary Islands, a nationalist alliance named ‘Unitat del Poble Canari (UPC)’ will include Coalición Canaria, Municipalistas Primero Canarias, Podem, IU, and Movimiento Sumar. Meanwhile, the PP and Vox are reportedly negotiating to coordinate their efforts in the Senate across several constituencies, including Tenerife, La Palma, and Fuerteventura, to consolidate right-wing votes.
