Spanish general election campaigns and Senate strategies

Overview

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has officially announced the dissolution of the Cortes, setting the general elections for Sunday, November 29.

As parties finalize candidate lists, the PSOE and Frente Amplio have reached a pact to present joint Senate candidacies across 43 provinces. Registered just before the legal deadline, this strategic move aims to challenge the People's Party (PP) majority in the Upper House and secure a role in potential constitutional reforms. This alliance excludes Catalonia and the Canary Islands, with the exception of La Gomera.

In response, the PP and Vox are exploring strategies to secure a three-fifths Senate majority, which would allow them to appoint four conservative magistrates to the Constitutional Court. Projections suggest that if the parties run separate candidacies, the right-wing bloc may fall short of the 161 seats required. To optimize results, they are considering agreements, such as Vox withdrawing in approximately twenty provinces, to counter the left-wing alliance.

Regional campaigning continues. In the Basque Country, the PSE-EE has presented candidates Patxi López (Bizkaia), Rafaela Romero (Gipuzkoa), and Javier Hurtado (Álava), with Secretary General Eneko Andueza seeking to build a majority to support Sánchez’s government. In Valladolid, Óscar Puente has campaigned by contrasting Spanish economic indicators with those of Argentina. Meanwhile, the government faces the resignation of nine high-ranking territorial representatives in Andalusia and Catalonia, effective October 20.
