Spanish lemon campaign delayed by heatwaves and high imports
The Spanish lemon campaign is expected to begin in late September or early October, following a delay of approximately one week caused by summer heatwaves. Enrique Fuentes, commercial director of Hijos de Alberto del Cerro, stated that there is currently no urgency to launch the Spanish campaign due to a massive supply of lemons from the Southern Hemisphere, primarily from South Africa, followed by Chile and Argentina.
These international imports have led to notably low prices in European markets. While the Spanish harvest is projected to see increased volumes for both Primofiori and Verna varieties compared to the previous year, the availability of Southern Hemisphere fruit will be a decisive factor for the start of the domestic season. Hijos de Alberto del Cerro is continuing to expand its production control through new land acquisitions and increased farmer participation in its commercial and pest control structures.
