Spanish lemon production and market conditions

Overview

The Spanish lemon campaign faces a delayed start, expected in late September or early October, following a one-week delay caused by summer heatwaves.

Commercial director Enrique Fuentes of Hijos de Alberto del Cerro noted that there is currently “no urgency to launch the Spanish campaign” because of a massive supply of lemons from the Southern Hemisphere, specifically from South Africa, Chile, and Argentina. This influx of international imports has resulted in notably low prices within European markets.

While Spanish production for Primofiori and Verna varieties is projected to increase compared to last year, the availability of Southern Hemisphere fruit remains a decisive factor for the domestic season. Meanwhile, Hijos de Alberto del Cerro is expanding its production control through new land acquisitions and increased farmer participation in commercial and pest control structures.
