Pediatricians warn of rising infection risks during school return
As children return to school and daycare, pediatric infectious disease specialist Genara Margarita Santana warns of an increased exchange of microorganisms. Respiratory infections and gastrointestinal illnesses are common during this period, with pneumonia being a primary concern for young children.
Experts emphasize the critical importance of staying up to date with pneumococcal vaccinations before entering school environments. In the Dominican Republic, the recommended vaccination schedule follows a 2+1 dosage pattern: injections at two months, four months, and twelve months of age. Santana notes that complete immunization is essential, as protection depends on receiving all necessary doses to cover existing serotypes.
