Spanish medical unions announce indefinite national strike
Spanish medical unions have announced an indefinite national strike, scheduled to begin on October 28, to protest the government's proposed Estatuto Marco reform. The strike is a response to the Council of Ministers' approval of the project, which unions argue maintains "unfair and discriminatory" labor conditions for medical professionals.
To strengthen their position, seven regional unions representing approximately 97,000 doctors—about 54% of the National Health System—have formed a new national confederation called the Unión Médica y Facultativa (UMYF). The participating organizations include Metges de Catalunya, which has also called for a strike in Catalonia to coincide with the national action.
The medical collective is demanding a specific regulatory framework that recognizes the unique responsibilities and training requirements of the profession. Key demands include improved working conditions, such as a 35-hour work week and better compensation for on-call hours, separate from the general statutory personnel regulations.
