Spain's ministers to face Congress over Ceuta migration crisis
On Friday the Spanish government registered requests for four ministers—Interior Minister Fernando Grande‑Marlaska, Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares, Defense Minister Margarita Robles and Presidency/Justice Minister Félix Bolaños—to appear before their respective committees in the Congress of Deputies during an extraordinary period. The scheduled appearances are: Robles on 25 August, Bolaños on 27 August, and both Marlaska and Albares on 28 August. They will explain the government's handling of the crisis that began on 30 July, when more than 72,000 illegal migrants entered the autonomous city of Ceuta from Morocco. The move follows pressure from opposition parties, especially the PP and ERC, which also sought sessions in the Senate. The government said the Congress is the constitutionally prevailing chamber and the hearings aim to avoid duplication of parliamentary scrutiny. Opposition leaders have also called for Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to appear before the full Congress, but no such plan has been announced.
