Spain increases museum security after series of major gold thefts

Spain's Ministry of Culture has called for urgent coordination with autonomous communities and law enforcement following a series of high-profile museum robberies targeting precious metals and gold. The most recent incident involved the theft of the Villena Treasure from the Villena Museum, a significant Bronze Age archaeological find. This follows previous thefts at the Archaeological Museum of Badajoz in April and the Museum of Albacete in July.

The Ministry is working with the National Police and the Guardia Civil to identify museums housing significant collections of gold, silver, and gemstones to implement enhanced security measures. While the government has faced criticism regarding the timing of its response following a Europol alert, officials maintain that they have been actively requesting inventories of valuable items from regional governments since mid-August.

Local scrutiny has also fallen on the Villena City Council, with reports suggesting that a very small fraction of the municipal budget was allocated to museum security. Investigations into the recent wave of professionalized thefts are ongoing as authorities attempt to combat an increase in violent and specialized criminal groups targeting cultural heritage.
