Cádiz council moves ahead with new urban transport service plan

The Cádiz City Council will vote tomorrow on the tender specifications for a new urban bus network. The contract is valued at approximately €29.6 million over ten years, with an estimated annual cost of €2.84 million. Funding will come from ticket sales, complemented by municipal subsidies to cover the total expense.

The tender requires the operator to use compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles instead of diesel, aiming to cut emissions. The service is planned to launch within a year of contract signing and will include 15 lines plus special routes as the city expands. Operators must staff the fleet with at least 27 drivers, an inspector, three mechanics, two administrative staff and a service manager, representing nearly half of the projected investment.

Council mayor José María Román highlighted that the selection criteria will balance price with environmental performance, service quality, technical organization, infrastructure, public communication and a sustainability plan.
