Spanish municipalities expand veterinary services for feral cat colonies

Local government initiatives in Spain are expanding veterinary support for feral cat colonies. In La Línea de la Concepción, the City Council has launched a tender for a comprehensive veterinary service contract. The four-year agreement, with a maximum budget of 48,400 euros, aims to provide 24-hour emergency care, hospitalization, surgery, and vaccinations to comply with animal welfare laws.

In Pontevedra, the Provincial Council's CAAN animal shelter program has treated nearly 3,000 cats over a two-year period. Operating with an annual budget of 350,000 euros, the program covers 40 municipalities, providing sterilization, microchipping, deworming, and vaccination. Recent investments in the center include new surgical equipment and capture cages to enhance the service.
