Spanish municipalities join Ecovidrio's Green Flag glass‑recycling campaign

The Ecovidrio "Green Flag" movement entered its seventh summer edition, inviting more than 120 Spanish municipalities and over 12,000 hospitality venues to improve the selective collection of glass waste. The initiative aims to award or re‑validate a Green Flag for sustainability by recognising municipalities that meet criteria such as increased collection, participation of at least half of local bars, restaurants and chiringuitos, and promotion of circular practices.

In the Valencian town of Orihuela, the city council and 96 local hospitality establishments will take part, competing with up to 28 municipalities in the region. In the Andalusian town of Lepe, the council and its hospitality sector are also joining the campaign, which will see Ecovidrio install around 200 new glass‑collection containers and provide roughly 1,300 wheeled bins free of charge. About 100 environmental educators will visit participating venues to offer training.

Manuel Sala, manager of Ecovidrio’s Valencian Community division, said the programme is “a source of pride as we celebrate another edition and thank the municipalities and HORECA sector for their commitment to circularity.” The campaign responds to a summer surge that accounts for one‑third of all glass containers placed in circulation, with roughly 50 % of single‑use glass waste originating from the hospitality sector.
