Madrid launches €2 million grant program for self‑employed

The Madrid City Council opened a new grant scheme on 4 July, allocating up to €2 million to support self‑employed workers. Applications are accepted online until 23 July and are processed on a first‑come, first‑served basis.

The programme offers three lines of aid: a generational‑relief grant of up to €10 000 for entrepreneurs who take over a business from a retiring, incapacitated or deceased owner and keep it in the same premises; an employment‑creation grant of up to €5 000 for those who increase their net staff in 2025; and a start‑up grant of €2 500 for newly registered self‑employed who have not been in the RETA in the previous five years. Documentation must prove the business transfer, employment contracts or new‑business registration.

Since 2021 the council has spent €11 017 500 on similar subsidies, assisting 3 176 recipients. With the current €2 million budget, the expected number of beneficiaries is 200‑400, far below the city’s more than 209 000 self‑employed workers, indicating limited coverage.
