Spain's defense industry expands through modernization and investment

The Spanish defense industry is undergoing significant expansion and technological modernization. The Spanish government has authorized 1,483 million euros to fund 14 Special Modernization Programs (PEM), which could mobilize up to 32,000 million euros through 2032. These programs target strategic areas such as combat aviation, missile systems, naval capabilities, and secure communications.

Major companies are responding with large-scale industrial projects. Indra is expanding its industrial footprint, including a new military vehicle factory in As Pontes, while Urovesa is investing over 50 million euros to expand its facilities in Galicia. Additionally, Navantia has launched a tender for a three-year framework agreement to calibrate measurement and monitoring equipment at its Cartagena and San Fernando centers.

On a broader scale, Luis Furnells, president of Oesía Group, has advocated for the creation of a European advanced technology agency. He argues that a common framework for innovation is essential to bridge the investment gap between European and American defense firms and to enhance Europe's strategic autonomy and deterrence capabilities.
