Spanish naval modernization and maintenance
Overview
The Spanish defense sector is implementing several initiatives to modernize and maintain its naval fleet. Indra has secured a contract to provide maintenance and life-cycle engineering for the Aegis combat system and sensors on F-100 Álvaro de Bazán-class frigates to support NATO, EU, and national missions.
Additionally, Navantia is set to begin construction of two new Maritime Action Vessels (BAM 7 and 8) at its Puerto Real shipyard in early 2027, a program valued at 716 million euros.
To support ongoing operations, the Spanish Council of Ministers has authorized 80 million euros for the maintenance and obsolescence management of surface vessels and Galerna-class submarines through the end of 2029. This funding, supported by the Arsenal de Cartagena, covers preventive and corrective repairs as well as the replacement of obsolete electronic, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
