Spanish Navy considers adding two anti-air frigates to fleet
The Spanish Navy is considering the acquisition of two additional F-110 class frigates specialized in anti-air warfare. This proposal is part of the Armada 2050 strategy, which aims to modernize the fleet with advanced combat capabilities for high-intensity scenarios.
These potential new units would be Flight II models, featuring enhanced anti-air and anti-missile capabilities, including more vertical launch cells and increased speed. They would join the five F-110 frigates currently under construction at the Navantia shipyard in Ferrol.
As part of the ongoing program, the F-112 Roger de Lauria is scheduled for its launching ceremony this Tuesday. The project is currently ahead of schedule, with the launch moved up from its original 2027 target. The F-110 program is designed to progressively replace the F-80 Santa María class vessels.
