Spanish Navy F-110 frigate development
Overview
The Spanish Navy and Navantia are collaborating on the F-110 class frigate program to modernize the fleet under the Armada 2050 strategy. This initiative aims to replace the F-80 Santa María class vessels with advanced ships capable of integrated air and missile defense (IAMD) against ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, aircraft, and drones.
Key technical features of the F-110 series include the SCOMBA New Generation combat management system, increased vertical launch capacity, and improved endurance. The program involves a 4.768 billion euro investment, with vessels such as the F-112 Roger de Lauria scheduled for launch ahead of its original 2027 target.
As the program progresses, the Spanish Navy is considering the acquisition of two additional Flight II models. These proposed units would feature enhanced anti-air and anti-missile capabilities, including more vertical launch cells and increased speed, to join the five F-110 frigates currently under construction.
