Spanish Navy deploys vessels for NATO Mediterranean mission

The Spanish Navy has deployed several vessels to the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic to support NATO maritime security and surveillance operations. The frigates ‘Navarra’ (F-85) and ‘Cristóbal Colón’ (F-105) have begun a mission lasting until November 2, which includes integration into NATO’s Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG-2) and participation in the Neptune Strike 26 exercise.

Additionally, the frigate ‘Blas de Lezo’ (F-103) and the replenishment ship ‘Patiño’ (A-14) are currently operating within SNMG-2 for approximately two and a half months. These units are participating in multinational exercises such as Mare Aperto, Mavi Balina, and Niriis, as well as Operation Noble Shield.

The deployments aim to enhance interoperability with allied navies, including those of Greece, Italy, France, and Turkey. The operations focus on maritime domain awareness, deterrence, and ensuring freedom of navigation in strategic areas such as the Strait of Gibraltar, the Alboran Sea, and the Mediterranean.
