Spanish Navy maritime activities and NATO deployments
Overview
The Spanish Navy has transitioned from public outreach, such as the 16th Madrid Naval Week in September, to active maritime security and surveillance deployments in the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic.
In early October, the Navy confirmed the deployment of several vessels to support NATO operations. The frigates ‘Navarra’ (F-85) and ‘Cristóbal Colón’ (F-105) began a mission scheduled through November 2, involving integration into Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG-2) and the Neptune Strike 26 exercise. Concurrently, the frigate ‘Blas de Lezo’ (F-103) and the replenishment ship ‘Patiño’ (A-14) joined SNMG-2 for an approximately two-and-a-half-month period. These units are participating in multinational exercises including Mare Aperto, Mavi Balina, Niriis, and Operation Noble Shield to enhance interoperability with allies such as Greece, Italy, France, and Turkey.
Furthering Mediterranean security efforts, the patrol vessel P-71 ‘Serviola’ participated in the Sea Border 2026 maneuvers near the Libyan coast as part of the 5+5 initiative. During this mission, the ‘Serviola’ made a port call in Tripoli, representing the first visit by a Spanish Navy vessel to the city since 2010. These collective operations focus on maritime domain awareness, deterrence, and ensuring freedom of navigation in strategic regions including the Strait of Gibraltar and the Alboran Sea.
