Spanish olive oil producers implement new sustainability and quality standards

Spanish agricultural organizations are implementing new technical and environmental standards for the upcoming olive oil campaign.

Dcoop has calculated the carbon footprint of its olive oil using a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach based on the UNE-EN ISO 14067:2019 standard. The study, which utilized data from 518 farms and 96 mills, found that 97% of CO2e emissions per kilogram of olive oil occur during the agricultural phase, while only 3% occur during the milling process. This data will be used to prioritize decarbonization measures within the group’s sustainability strategies.

Simultaneously, Grupo Interóleo is focusing on quality control and digitalization for the 2026/2027 campaign. A recent technical session in Jaén emphasized the prevention and detection of mineral oil hydrocarbons, specifically MOSH (mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons) and MOAH (mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons). Industry representatives noted that controlling these substances has transitioned from a technical concern to a mandatory market access requirement for many clients.
