Spanish organizations mark World Alzheimer's Day with advocacy and events

In observance of World Alzheimer's Day on September 21, various organizations in Spain are launching initiatives to raise awareness and funds for the disease.

In Pontevedra, the Association of Relatives of Alzheimer's Patients (AFAPO) has issued a formal demand to the Ministry of Health regarding the public funding of new treatments. AFAPO President José Manuel Fontenla noted that while new medications can improve the quality of life for patients by approximately 40%, they are currently only available through private healthcare. The association argues that public funding would increase access and potentially reduce long-term public costs associated with managing symptoms.

To support their cause, AFAPO is organizing several events, including a solidarity motorcycle route with the Civil Guard, cognitive deterioration prevention workshops, and a charity gala.

In Alsasua, the Clínica Josefina Arregui will host its fifth annual Alzheimer's Popular March on September 20. The event features two walking routes of 4 and 8 kilometers, alongside community activities, music, and dance intended to foster a festive atmosphere around the cause.
