Spanish police crack down on high-speed electric scooters
Spanish local police have reported several high-speed violations and regulatory infractions involving personal mobility vehicles (VMP), specifically electric scooters, following the implementation of new traffic regulations.
In San Andrés del Rabanedo, authorities issued 35 citations within a week of new DGT rules taking effect. Notable infractions included a scooter traveling at 88 km/h and another vehicle modified to exceed the 25 km/h limit. Other common violations included riding without a helmet, lack of mandatory insurance, and failure to register the vehicles. Fines for tampering with speed limits range between €200 and €500, accompanied by the immediate seizure of the vehicle.
In Palma, police intercepted a heavily modified electric scooter in a pedestrian area. Technical tests later revealed the vehicle could reach speeds of 103.2 km/h, more than four times the legal limit. The owner admitted to installing two 1,000 W batteries to increase the total power to 2,000 W and configuring the device to bypass speed restrictions.
