Spanish police enforce drunk‑driving laws on cars and e‑scooters

In Salamanca, local police stopped a driver on the Torres Villarroel boulevard at 04:55 on 28 June. The driver had exhausted all points on his licence and recorded a breath‑alcohol level of 0.45 mg/L, above the legal limit. He was charged with a traffic‑safety offense and the case referred to the courts.

On 7 May near Gandia (Valencia), Guardia Civil officers at an alcohol‑and‑drug checkpoint intercepted a 25‑year‑old riding an electric scooter whose alcohol concentration was almost four times the permitted level. He received a €1,000 fine, the scooter was immobilised, and he was charged for operating an unregistered vehicle. The incident illustrates the newly‑effective Spanish regulations that, from January 2026, require electric scooters to be registered, certified, display an identification label and carry compulsory liability insurance.
