Ceuta migration crisis: Spain requests EU agency support FAST-MOVING
Following a mass arrival of approximately 72,000 migrants in Ceuta on July 30 and 31, the Spanish government has requested urgent assistance from European agencies to manage the ongoing crisis. Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska has formally asked the European Commission for support from Frontex, Europol, and the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) to assist with the screening, identification, and processing of the approximately 5,000 migrants who remain in the territory.
The request includes an extension of Operation Minerva and the deployment of ten additional Frontex agents to expedite information gathering. Due to space constraints in Ceuta, the government is considering remote assistance for interviews and interpreters provided by the EUAA.
To address the humanitarian needs, the Spanish government has increased humanitarian aid funding for Ceuta to 44.51 million euros. This includes a 116 percent increase in the capacity of the Temporary Stay Center for Immigrants, raising it from 512 to 1,105 places. As of August 27, authorities reported the delivery of 93,650 food kits and significant medical assistance provided by the Red Cross, including 6,687 health services and 256 hospital transfers.
