Spanish prosecutors support investigation into Julio Iglesias

The Spanish Prosecution Service has reversed its previous stance, now supporting the jurisdiction of the Audiencia Nacional to investigate allegations against singer Julio Iglesias. This shift follows a prior dismissal in January, where authorities argued Spanish courts lacked jurisdiction because the alleged incidents occurred abroad.

Two former employees, working as a housekeeper and a physiotherapist, have filed a complaint alleging sexual assault, human trafficking for forced labor, and labor exploitation. The complainants claim the abuses occurred in 2021 at the singer’s properties in the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic. They describe extreme working conditions, including 16-hour shifts, lack of legal contracts, and restricted movement.

The investigation is supported by organizations including Women’s Link Worldwide and Amnesty International. While the Prosecution’s favorable report allows the case to proceed, a judge must still make the final determination on whether to formally open the investigation. Julio Iglesias has categorically denied all accusations, describing them as “absolutely false.”
