Ceuta migrant crisis triggers legal disputes and 25 million euro aid package FAST-MOVING
The Spanish enclave of Ceuta continues to face a severe humanitarian and administrative crisis following a massive influx of migrants from Morocco in late July. Authorities have revised the number of identified minors to approximately 1,500, including about 700 girls. The local child protection system is reportedly facing an overcapacity of 4,700%.
To address the crisis, the central government has approved a 25 million euro fund to cover costs such as housing, medical care, and legal support for these minors. While most autonomous communities supported the transfer, regional governments in Aragón, Castilla y León, and Extremadura—where Vox holds power—boycotted the sectoral conference and announced they will legally challenge any attempt to transfer unaccompanied minors to their territories unless they are first returned to Morocco.
In response to rising crime and safety concerns, the Attorney General has announced the deployment of three additional prosecutors from mainland Spain to Ceuta. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health is prioritizing the relocation of migrants from the streets into sanitary, sheltered spaces to ensure basic hygiene and health monitoring.
