Spanish renewable energy sector faces market volatility and regulatory pressure

The Spanish renewable energy sector is facing dual pressures from market integration issues and potential government intervention. Despite a decrease in the share of renewables in the national electricity mix—dropping to 55.2% in August from highs of 64.1% in early spring—the system continues to struggle with negative prices and non-integrable renewable energy (ERNI).

In August, APPA Renovables reported 552 GWh of ERNI and 258 four-hour periods where electricity prices were zero or below. This suggests that a lower presence of renewables does not automatically alleviate system tensions.

Simultaneously, the market has reacted negatively to news that the Spanish government plans to approve a decree on September 29 to contain energy prices. This announcement led to a significant drop in share prices for renewable companies, with Grenergy falling 13.5% and Solaria declining 5.9%. The market's reaction reflects concerns that political measures, such as the potential reactivation of the Iberian exception to cap gas prices, could compress generator margins and alter the sector's regulatory framework.
