Spanish retailers implement circular economy and waste reduction strategies
Spanish companies Viena Capellanes and El Corte Inglés are implementing new sustainability strategies focused on the circular economy and waste reduction.
Viena Capellanes has approved a Food Waste Reduction Plan to align with Law 1/2025. The company aims to reduce waste at the source by optimizing purchasing, production, logistics, and catering. Since 2020, the firm has recovered approximately 50,000 food packs, preventing 133 tons of CO2 emissions and saving over 40 million liters of water. For the upcoming period, the company targets a 5% reduction in food waste at stores and corners compared to 2025 levels.
El Corte Inglés has reported an 8.9% reduction in global plastic use in its packaging compared to 2024. The company stated that 100% of its food area packaging is now designed to be recyclable, reusable, or compostable, with 33.5% of the plastic used consisting of recycled material. Additionally, the retailer collected and donated over 630 tons of textiles through its in-store collection points for reuse and recycling projects.
