Spain's Partido Popular challenges 'Ley de Nietos' electoral impact

The Spanish opposition, led by the Partido Popular (PP), is intensifying its challenge against the government regarding the application of the Democratic Memory Law, commonly known as the ‘Ley de Nietos’. The controversy centers on a judicial suspension by the Supreme Court regarding the electoral effects of the law, which allows descendants of Spanish exiles to claim nationality.

The PP accuses the government of insubordination for failing to implement Supreme Court rulings that limit the scope of these nationalizations. The opposition argues that the current administrative instructions allow for improper citizenship grants, potentially inflating the voting census of residents abroad (CERA) and impacting future elections.

In response, the Ombudsman, Ángel Gabilondo, has appealed to the Constitutional Court to overturn the Supreme Court’s precautionary measure. This move has drawn sharp criticism from the PP, which characterizes the appeal as a political service to the Sánchez administration. The legal battle remains unresolved, with potential implications for the validity of upcoming electoral results if the status of these new citizens is contested.
