The legal dispute has gained international attention, with 26 Members of the European Parliament requesting European Commission intervention over concerns regarding “proportionality, equality, and political participation.”
In a separate development, the Spanish Constitutional Court rejected an appeal by the Ombudsman regarding the suspension of voting rights. The Court dismissed the appeal by a 10-to-2 majority, ruling it premature because ordinary legal channels had not been fully exhausted. However, two dissenting judges, Ramón Sáez and Juan Carlos Campo, issued a particular vote warning of ‘irreparable’ harm, arguing that doctrine should allow appeals against precautionary measures when the violation of the fundamental right to suffrage is massive and threatens to become irreversible.
