Spain Supreme Court orders government to identify 163,020 affected voters

The Spanish Supreme Court has issued an ultimatum to Ministers Félix Bolaños and José Manuel Albares, demanding a nominal list of 163,020 citizens affected by the suspension of voting rights linked to the ‘Ley de Nietos’ (Law of Grandchildren). The court has set a deadline of October 28 at 3:00 PM to provide these names, warning that failure to comply could result in fines of up to 1,000 euros or criminal charges for disobedience.

The dispute stems from a judicial suspension affecting naturalized citizens who obtained nationality via a government instruction that previously presumed exile status for those leaving Spain between 1936 and 1955. The Supreme Court now requires documentary proof of exile rather than relying on this presumption.

Currently, out of 31,390 reviewed files, only 91 individuals have successfully accredited their exile status. This identification is considered fundamental by the court for the correct formation of the electoral census for the general elections scheduled for November 29.
