Xunta de Galicia demands new nationality law for Spaniards abroad
The Xunta de Galicia has called for a specific nationality law for Spaniards living abroad, citing legal insecurity caused by the current management of the 'Grandchildren Law' (Ley de Nietos). Antonio Rodríguez Miranda, the General Secretary of Emigration, criticized the use of administrative instructions to expand certain provisions and noted difficulties in consular services and the electoral census for residents abroad (CERA).
Simultaneously, legal counsel for the Spanish Congress has issued a report stating that an amendment proposed by the Sumar group to the Education Law is 'incongruent' with the bill's purpose. The amendment sought to protect the voting rights of descendants of exiles following a Supreme Court ruling. The Partido Popular has criticized this move as an attempt to use an 'intruder amendment' to bypass judicial decisions and alter the electoral census.
