People's Party proposes revoking Spanish nationality for serious criminals

The Spanish People's Party (PP), led by Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has announced plans for an organic law to allow the revocation of Spanish nationality for immigrants who commit serious crimes, such as murder, sexual assault, or involvement in terrorist and criminal organizations. Feijóo described nationality as an ‘act of trust’ that is broken by such actions.

This proposal arrives amid legal controversy surrounding the ‘grandchildren law,’ which granted nationality to descendants of Spanish exiles. The Supreme Court has issued a precautionary measure suspending the voting rights of approximately 400,000 naturalized citizens to prevent potential electoral interference. The court requires individual documentary proof of exile to maintain enrollment in the electoral census. Vox has requested that the Supreme Court summon all affected citizens to ensure procedural guarantees.

In response to the judicial decision, the Spanish government has criticized the ruling, with officials labeling it a ‘democratic outrage.’ Meanwhile, Feijóo has also proposed a housing plan aimed at young people, featuring significant tax breaks and public guarantees of up to 100% to facilitate property purchases. Additionally, he has called on the European Union to prioritize the defense of the Ceuta border with the same urgency as Ukraine's eastern border.
