Spanish Supreme Court to review 'grandparents law' electoral effects
The Spanish Supreme Court's Administrative Litigation Chamber is set to review the electoral implications of the Democratic Memory Law, often referred to as the 'grandparents law'. The review follows appeals filed by the political party Vox and the organization Iuistitia Europa.
The legal challenge focuses on whether the Central Electoral Board failed in its duties by declaring itself incompetent to rule on the matter last July. The appellants are seeking to suspend the law's effects while the court examines the core issue: the granting of Spanish nationality to descendants of Spaniards living abroad who were victims of exile.
The Supreme Court has scheduled two consecutive public hearings for Monday starting at 10:00. Defendants in the case include the Central Electoral Board, the Ministry of the Presidency, Justice and Relations with the Cortes, and the National Statistics Institute (INE).
