Spanish towns boost fire prevention measures as summer wildfire risk rises

The municipality of Guadarrama (Spain) is completing a brush‑clearing and cleaning campaign across parks, streets and residential areas such as Las Cabezuelas, Colonia Media Luna and Residencia Mónica. The work, funded by an additional €14,628 contract, aims to lower the risk of forest fires during the hot summer months. Officials also reminded private landowners of their legal duty to keep vegetation dry and warned that fires and spark‑producing equipment are prohibited within 400 m of high‑risk zones.

In the city of Elche, the local fire station reported several maintenance problems that could hamper firefighting during the same fire season. Issues include a leaking skylight, broken glass, faulty automatic doors, and an insufficient stock of 25 mm attack hoses. Firefighters say they need 20–30 more hoses of that size and additional types. A €65,000 tender has been launched to purchase 440 hoses, with a 15‑day delivery deadline, to support Elche and surrounding municipalities serving over 350,000 residents.
