Spanish towns boost security for horse races, festivals and eclipse

The mayor of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Carmen Álvarez, chaired a local security board that approved a special security device for the 181st edition of the town’s horse races, scheduled for 8‑10 August and 21‑23 August. The plan involves the National Police, Civil Guard, regional and local police, civil protection, fire services, Red Cross, emergency health services and the municipal cleaning company Emulisan, and will be coordinated from the Municipal Emergency Center (Cecop).

In Cocentaina, mayor Rubén Muñoz and the sub‑delegate of the Government in Alicante, Manuel Pineda, presided over a security meeting for the upcoming Moros i Cristians festivals. The device will feature a higher number of security personnel than the previous year, the installation of “Punts Violeta” with informational material from the sub‑delegation, and a self‑protection plan.

In the province of Soria, sub‑delegate Miguel Latorre and Agreda’s deputy mayor Isabel Mena Ruiz led a local security board to organise safety measures for the total solar eclipse on 12 August 2026. Official observation points will be set up in Agreda, Borobia, Castillejo de Robledo, Garray and San Leonardo, with volunteer training on gender‑based violence and “Punto Violeta”, and a coordinated traffic control plan by the Provincial Traffic Directorate.
