Spanish towns extend and review municipal waste collection contracts

The City Council of Donostia (San Sebastian) approved a three‑year extension of the SMATSA waste‑collection contract, pushing its expiry to the end of 2030. Mayor Mar Molina said the extension provides time to develop a new service model, including possible use of RFID‑enabled bins and new billing methods.

In the coastal town of Torredembarra, officials will meet this week to decide whether to municipalise the waste‑cleaning service or continue with an external provider. The temporary emergency contract signed in 2023 is set to run until 2026, and the council aims to award a new long‑term contract before the 2027 municipal elections.
